Overview

UN Sanctions

There are no current UN sanctions on Guinea.

EU Sanctions

In response to the violent response to by government security forces to pollical demonstrators in Conakry, in 2009 the EU introduced an arms embargo, asset freezes and travel bans against members of the government via Council Regulation (EU) No 1284/2009 and Council Decision 2010/638/CFSP.  The arms embargo is no longer in place, but the asset freezes and travel bans remain.

UK Sanctions

In January 2021, the UK adopted the Guinea (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 to encourage the government of Guinea to: (i) investigate properly the violent repression in Guinea on 28th September 2009 and the aftermath of that violent repression; and (ii) hold to account and bring criminal proceedings against the persons responsible for that violent repression and its aftermath.

The US does not have a Guinea sanctions regime, but in December 2022, the US designated former President of Guinea, Alpha Condé, for “his connection to serious human rights abuses” pursuant to its Global Magnitsky sanctions regime, EO 13818.
