Overview

UN Sanctions

There are no current UN sanctions on Nicaragua.

EU Sanctions

The EU introduced its Nicaragua sanctions regime in  2019 against individuals and entities responsible for human rights violations and or for the repression of civil society and democratic opposition, consisting of a targeted assets freeze and travel bans under Council Regulation (EU) 2019/1716 and Council Decision (CFSP) 2019/1720.

UK Sanctions

The UK retained the Nicaragua sanctions after it left the EU under the Nicaragua (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2020.

US Sanctions

In 2018, US President Trump signed EO 13851 which declared a national emergency with respect to the Government of Nicaragua’s response to protests and undermining of democratic institutions, authorising asset freezes and travel bans on those complicit in those activities.  In October 2022, President Biden extended the Nicaragua sanctions providing for sanctions on individuals and entities operating in the gold sector and banning the import/export of certain goods from/to Nicaragua under EO 14088.
