Overview
UN Sanctions
In response to concerns about the undermining of the Yemini Government, In February 2014, the UN established the UN Yemen Sanctions Committee and imposed an assets freeze and a travel ban on individuals and entities engaging in or providing support for acts that threatened the peace, security or stability of Yemen by UN Resolution 2140 (2014). In April 2015, the UN introduced a targeted arms embargo on designated individuals and entities by UN Resolution 2216 (2015).
Currently, the Yemen sanctions regime consists of an assets freeze, a travel ban, and a targeted arms embargo against individuals and entities on the sanctions list.
EU Sanctions
The EU implements UN sanctions by Council Regulation (EU) No 1352/2014 and Council Decision 2014/932/CFSP.
UK Sanctions
The UK adopted the Yemen (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2020 in January 2021 to ensure that the UK implements its obligations under the UN sanctions regime concerning Yemen.
US Sanctions
In response to the obstruction of the transition of governmental power, the US first introduced Yemen-related sanctions prior to the UN sanctions in May 2012 when President Barack Obama signed EO 13611, which imposed asset freezes on individuals who engaged in acts that threatened the peace and security of Yemen. The US implements UN sanctions (see Yemen Sanctions Regulations).
