Overview
The sanctions have since been lifted, and Yugoslavia broken up into smaller states.
EU sanctions on Yugoslavia were first introduced in March 1998, by Common Position 98/240/CFSP, consisting of an arms embargo on the country and a travel ban on Serbian representatives responsible for repressive action in Kosovo. In particular, the sanctions were imposed in view of violence against the Kosovar Albanian community in Kosovo. The sanctions were independent of UN sanctions on Yugoslavia.
The EU’s sanctions on Yugoslavia have since been lifted. There remains in force a prohibition on satisfying claims in respect of contracts and transactions, the performance of which was affected by measures imposed by UN Security Council Resolution 757 (1992) and related resolutions.
