EU renews Russia targeted sanctions for 3 years and delists Usmanov and Fridman

The EU Council has agreed to renew its financial sanctions on people and entities designated under Regulation (EU) 269/2014, and to delist 3 people and 1 entity from the list of people designated under Reg 269 - Press Release. Reuters reports that the delisted people include Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman.

The EU previously renewed its Russia financial sanctions regime every 6 months, by the Council adopting a unanimous vote. The Council of the EU last extended the deadline to do so by a week on 16 September 2026, because of internal disagreements relating to the delistings. The agreement now renews the sanctions regime for 3 years, after Latvia – which opposed it – abstained from the vote and dropped its veto.  The agreement will be formally adopted when all member states submit their written consent.
