The UN Security Council debated UN sanctions on Iran on 9 June 2026. UN sanctions were reimposed on Iran in August 2025 for the first time since 2015 after the UK, France and Germany triggered the ‘snapback’ procedure over what they said was Iran’s “significant noncompliance” with its obligations under the Iran nuclear deal. The procedure reinstated the UN sanctions regime against Iran pursuant to Resolution 1737 (2006).

Russia and China recorded their opposition to the reimposed sanctions. They said that the snapback procedure was not implemented by UNSC consensus (which is not a condition of the snapback procedure) and that, therefore, Iran should not be subject to sanctions.

As a result of the debate, Liberia proposed that the Secretary-General establish interim Secretariat-led reporting arrangements negotiations to address nuclear concerns in Iran.
