US designates Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as Specially Designated Global Terrorist

BlackMac/Shutterstock.comThe US Department of State has designated the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood, which it says “uses unrestrained violence against civilians”, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) – press release – fact sheet. The US has also said it will designate the organisation as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO). The FTO designation will come into effect when a notice is published in the Federal Register. For details on the impact of designation as an FTO or SDGT, see our US counterterrorism sanctions pages.
The US also modified the designation of the Al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade, which is said to be an armed wing of the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood, to reflect its new status as an SDGT due to its connection with the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood. The US previously added the Egyptian, Jordanian, and Lebanese Muslim Brotherhood branches as SDGTs and FTOs in January 2026.
The US published an Executive Order in November 2025 requiring the Treasury and State Department to consider designated chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as FTOs and SDGTs.
