Mr Ormerod was sanctioned in 2025 for operating in Russia’s energy sector. He was said to have procured vessels for Russia on behalf of a subsidiary of Lukoil.
In a statement published on 19 February 2026, Mr Ormerod recognised that by his previous actions he had risked being sanctioned, stated that he had not engaged in any similar activity since and in an expression of changed behaviour, promised not to engage in such actions or with anyone in a sector of strategic significance to Russia and encouraged others to learn from his experience.
