Sweden publishes report on compliance with Russia

Rapit Design/Shutterstock.comSwedish police have published a report on compliance with the EU’s Russia sanctions regimes between February 2022-September 2024 saying:
- Sweden has frozen €43 million n assets under Regulation (EU) 269/2014. Almost 90% of the assets were linked to sanctioned people and the remaining, 10% to sanctioned Russian banks, and a small percentage to sanctioned entities other than banks.
- Five reported asset freezes were of a value of €1 million or more.
- Sweden reviewed 3,500 export declarations concerning sanctions in 2023. Over 200 shipments were stopped. 3,000 export destinations were subject to special review measures in 2024.
- Banks operating in Sweden generally have a good understanding and appropriate technical systems in place to be able to comply with the sanctions regulations.
In their press statement on the report, Swedish police have outlined how sanctions may be circumvented in Sweden, including through the use of cryptocurrency and exporting to countries that do not apply sanctions against Russia.
